I stopped taking the long route past the dog park. I couldn't handle any more stares from people who looked at me as if I had no control over my own dog. My fingers went numb after every walk. My shoulder ached all evening.

And the worst was the sound. Every time he lunged forward, I heard him cough against the collar. I felt terrible, because I was the one holding the leash. I'd switch streets when I saw another dog. Not for his sake, but for mine.

I tried everything. Dog training classes. Treats in my pocket on every walk. Three different harnesses. Shorter leash, longer leash. Nothing lasted more than a few days. And no, it wasn't because I hadn't trained enough. I did everything right. It just didn't matter.

Then I learned something that changed everything. A regular harness has the attachment point on the back. When the dog pulls, he can pull with his whole body, straight forward, just like a real sled dog. The harness I had was literally a pulling harness. I was forcing him to pull without knowing it. And the collar was worse, all the pressure directly on his neck and windpipe.

When the attachment is on the front, something entirely different happens. He pulls, and his body gently turns back towards me, instantly. No choking, no pain, no struggle.

No training. Just physics.

The first walk, I almost cried. No pulling. No struggle. He just walked beside me, as if it had never been a problem. We're taking the long route again now, past the dog park. He meets other dogs without me tensing up. My arm is fine when I get home. And I no longer look down at the ground when people pass by.

It was never his fault. And it was never mine either.
